The benefit to your school

Permission is required to copy or reproduce copyrighted song lyrics and sheet music in school. Because the Schools Printed Music Licence (SPML) does not cover songs used in assemblies, CCLI’s school licences provide a simple and cost-effective solution to legally reproduce thousands of popular assembly songs and hymns.

The Department for Education currently pays for CCLI’s Collective Worship copyright licences for all state-funded schools in England. However, schools are still licensed directly by CCLI.

Important: Updating Your School Details

All details held by CCLI for your school are taken from your DfE record. Any corrections should be submitted directly to them. Please do not contact CCLI to ask for changes to this record.

CCLI is proud to partner with IAPS to help ensure independent schools in the UK are correctly licensed to reproduce many songs and hymns popular in assemblies.

While the Schools Printed Music Licence (SPML) covers the use of songs in lessons, CCLI’s licences are required when songs are used during assemblies and times of collective worship. Through this partnership, CCLI’s licences are now available through the simple IAPS licence process.

It’s vital that you report the songs you reproduce or copy under your licences. This is done using CCLI’s Reporting website. Our Reporting Support page will help you get started and walk you through the process to make reporting as simple and quick as possible.

School licences Q&A

CCLI's Collective Worship licences cover a huge range of worship songs and music publications popular in school assemblies. To confirm if a publication is covered check the Authorised Publications in our Copyright Owners Lists.

The number of copies you make under the Collective Worship Music Reproduction Licence depends on your licence size category. For example, a category B size school (50-99) can make up to 99 copies of any section of a publication under their licence(s). You may keep any copies made under the licence for as long as your licence remains active.

Many schools are not aware that the Schools Printed Music Licence (SPML) does not cover the use of songs in assemblies and during times of collective worship. CCLI’s licences fill this gap, permitting the fair and legal use of songs in this context whilst ensuring songwriters and rights holders are fairly paid for the use of their work.

If you only ever use songs that are public domain, you will not need a licence to reproduce them.

However, as a separate typographic right exists in any typeset page, permission may be required to photocopy sheet music even if the song you wish to reproduce is out of copyright. Always check the copyright information at the beginning of the publication for details.
