Copyright Compliance and the role of CCLI Licenses
The societies we live in have norms that we all commit to and honor. Copyright law is a norm that our society has created to protect the rights of creators. As a church community, it is natural for us to uphold this norm as members of society.
Social norms compliance
As South Korea's economy grows and its culture becomes more sophisticated, copyright compliance is becoming increasingly commonplace.
TV commercials and dramas, music playing on the streets and in supermarkets, fonts and photos in books, and other cultural content that we encounter in our daily lives are created and used in compliance with copyright laws. As a society, we already respect, protect, and follow the laws that protect the rights of businesses and individuals to their creative works.
Even churches are breaking the law when they use other creators' work, including music, computer programs, photos, videos, fonts, and more, unless they have permission.
Respecting copyright law is not only about protecting the rights of businesses and individuals, but also the rights of churches to their creative works. Churches should take the lead in ensuring that healthy cultural content is respected, protected, and used appropriately.
The role of CCLI licenses
1. support creators with transparent royalty payments backed by accurate statistics.
Transparently distribute license annual fees (royalties) from more than 230,000 churches around the world who are members of CCLI to more than 7,000 copyright organizations around the world twice a year. (Starting in the second half of 2024, this will change to four annual payments).
All creators around the world are paid on the same day and on the same basis, based on the church's usage reporting.
We send statistical reports on the size and details of each settlement to copyright holders and rights management organizations, so by licensing CCLI, you are actively supporting the creative work of Christian artists.
The details of CCLI's royalty settlement activities and distribution of royalties can be found through the copyright organization with which the creator has contracted. We recommend contacting the copyright organization directly.

2. Prevent copyright infringement disputes.
Copyright organizations are increasingly cracking down on unauthorized YouTube streaming. This is because big data from YouTube, the site most commonly used by churches for streaming worship services, is increasingly accurate in its copyright analysis and reports any videos it deems infringing to the rights organizations.
Obtaining a license can prevent unnecessary disputes about what the CCLI license allows.
3. convenient worship preparation tools.
CCLI-licensed churches can subscribe to the sheet music site SongSelect for a fee. SongSelect is a worship music site used by over 110,000 churches worldwide, and you can't subscribe without a CCLI license.
You can use convenient functions for preparing worship songs, such as downloading chord scores and single-line scores and changing the chords, and use the integration function of apps that support SongSelect to make worship preparation more convenient. (iPad sheet music app Charts, subtitle program Presenter, worship preparation app Plannin, automatic usage reporting, etc.)
4. Licensed churches.
As Korean culture becomes more sophisticated and copyright awareness spreads, the number of South Korean churches using media to praise and worship is growing rapidly.
In these times, the church's exemplary copyright compliance is a good example of the Korean church's youth and maturity, honesty and respect, freedom and responsibility, social participation and solidarity to our society.
Today, more than 250,000 churches worldwide are CCLI-licensed, including nearly 1,500 domestic churches, including the churches below.

Introducing Korean original songs abroad
In addition to promoting copyright compliance, CCLI is very interested in the revitalization and dissemination of Korean church worship and praise, as we work between songwriters and churches.
Through CCLI's worldwide rights network and worship sheet music site SongSelect, CCLI Korea has begun to introduce Korean songs to the world, and will continue to do so in order to bring the gracious and beautiful songs of the Korean church to the rest of the world.
CCLI licensing benefits both the church and the songwriter.
While copyright permissions for copying, recording, and streaming of various musical scores within a church are typically obtained on a per-use basis, CCLI created the CCLI License to make it safe and convenient for churches to comply with copyright and has agreements with more than 7,000 copyright organizations around the world.
The easiest way for churches to protect their copyrights is to obtain a CCLI license.
Licensing is the right thing to do as a member of society, but it's also a way to support church culture.
For the creators of songs that enrich worship, copyright compliance by churches will be seen as a source of motivation, reward, gratitude, and grace to continue creating. With so many churches around the world already on board, it's only natural to join the CCLI.
