A choir score is a secondary work that is a creative addition to an existing song that contains the exact intent of the arranger.
Copyright for secondary works is copyrighted and requires separate permission. For choral music, you must purchase and use as many copies of the publication as necessary. (Article 22 of the Copyright Act)
Using YouTube
YouTube doesn’t own the videos uploaded to its platform, and doesn’t have the rights to license them for public display. As a result, YouTube’s terms restrict videos on its site to private viewing only. This means that to legally show a video from YouTube in church, you would need to contact the copyright owner(s) beforehand, and ensure that you have their permission, and that the source or channel you are using is authorized.
If you’re unable to obtain permission to show a video from YouTube, CCLI's advice is to find an alternative source. Wherever you get your videos, CCLI recommends you always check the terms of the site you are using, and never assume you can use a video without confirming you are allowed to show it in public.
You can run them separately.
- If you are a department of a church that is part of the registered church size, you are covered by the license you have acquired and do not need to acquire a separate license.
- Be sure to include the same license information for your church in the video or in the description.
If you have a large audience, YouTube may show unwanted ads. If you don't want ads, use your homepage or another streaming site instead of YouTube.
The CCLI license authorizes use of the website and various streaming sites for delivery. This includes YouTube, but if you are not comfortable using YouTube, we recommend using another streaming site.
YouTube is a service that allows users to upload and transmit videos for free, and earns revenue through advertising. If a church/organization has a streaming license and uploads a video to YouTube, there may be copyright disputes due to ads or music in the video.
If you receive a copyright claim on YouTube for songs covered by your CCLI Streaming License, you don't need to take any action. YouTube automatically analyzes videos to detect when they contain other people's work. When they do, they will notify the copyright holder, and the publisher who uploaded the video will be notified with a “report copyright infringement" notice.
Once the copyright holder is notified by YouTube, they can review the video and take action against any unauthorized use. If you use CCLI's management songs within the scope of the license, the copyright holder will not sanction you if they see that you have obtained a CCLI license.
For full information read out article on Streaming and YouTube.
By disputing a copyright claim, you are asserting ownership of the song. Upon filing a claim, the copyright owner will notify YouTube that they own the song, and your channel may be penalized. You shouldn't dispute songs with valid copyrights. Only appeal if you're using a song you created or one whose copyright has expired.
